Read Bass!
Read Bass! is a practice tool for anyone learning to read the bass clef — upright bass, electric bass, cello, trombone, tuba, bassoon, left-hand piano, or anyone who has spent years in treble clef and now needs the other one.
LEARN
Bass Chart — every note from E2 below the staff to C4 above it, named and laid out in a single reference you can keep coming back to.
Bass Clef Basics — what a staff actually is, why the bass clef is also called the F clef, and how ledger lines extend the staff past its five lines.
Mnemonics — the classic memory aids for line notes and space notes, shown against the staff so the letters attach to positions instead of floating free.
Explore the staff — tap anywhere on the staff and hear that pitch while the app names it. Add a sharp or a flat and hear the difference. This is the fastest way to build the link between a spot on the page and a sound in your ear.
PRACTICE
Three modes, ten cards per round:
Note → Letter. The staff shows a note; pick its letter name. Straight sight-reading drill.
Letter + Sound → Staff. You see a letter and hear its pitch; tap where it sits on the staff. This works the reverse direction, from name to position.
Sound → Staff. Only the pitch plays. Find it on the staff by ear. The hardest mode, and the one that builds a real connection between what you hear and what you read.
Correct answers turn green. Wrong ones turn red and show you the right note, so every card teaches you something whether you got it or not.
REAL BASS, NOT SYNTHESIZED TONES
Every pitch in the app is an actual double bass recording, made for this app. You hear the instrument rather than a sine wave — which matters when the point is connecting written notes to the sound you're trying to produce.
